I think your choice of the word "weird" to describe your sadness/frustration regarding your place in your Mother's life is completely accurate. It must have felt so odd to have someone come in and suggest a different family member to help take care of her, because it means that not only is your Mother somewhat unsure of the role you wish to play but so is everyone else!
I think you are right, though: this is an opportunity for you to connect with her in a new way on a different level.
